Few noticed banking lobbyist Richard Hohlt, but Molly Ivins did

Here in full is a Jan 12, 1994, Molly Ivins piece on the S&L scandal -- which, BTW, we are still paying for. Note among others the name of Bob Novak source and banking industry lobbyist Hohlt. Ivins, as so often, was on to something:
"WHITEWATER TRIP COULD FRY OTHER FISH, TOO
One of the greatest frustrations of my life was the savings-and-loan scandal -- sittin' there in Dallas in the heart of the inferno, raging out of control all around us, and we couldn't get anyone to pay attention! I know some Dallas journalists who say they twigged as early as ... more »

"Hillary's" biggest boosters: the neocons
by

Why do the neocons boost Hillary Clinton to win?
Neocons boost Clinton while rightwing noise machine attacks John Edwards, Obama
We can tell practically at a glance whom the Republican Party wants Democrats to nominate for the White House in 2008. As of this writing, prominent neocons in the large media outlets are treating Hillary Clinton either gently or as a shoo-in, while the GOP attack wing – which, in the public discourse, is roughly 90 percent of the GOP – is doing everything it can to tear down John Edwards and Barack Obama. Election 2008 looms ... more »

Some of those missing "Go ahead, Jeff" Q, from earlier WH transcripts
by

on Tue 13 Feb 2007 07:22 AM EST
In response to questions from other readers of White House transcripts, posted below are some typical excerpts from WH press briefings featuring Jeff Gannon. The phrase "go ahead, Jeff" which precedes each has by now been expunged from the transcripts from these dates but WAS there when I found these:
[January 25, 2005] Go ahead, Jeff. Q There's been a war of words going on between the White House and the Senate Democrats over Condoleezza Rice's nomination to be secretary of State. Andrew Card said that Democrats are playing petty politics. Barbara Boxer shoots back that, well, it's our ... more »

by

on Mon 12 Feb 2007 02:44 PM EST
Here is Andrea Mitchell’s actual statement about Joe Wilson on October 3, 2003, from NBC transcripts. The program was Capital Report, co-hosted by Alan Murray:
“MURRAY And the second question is: Do we have any idea how widely known it was in Washington that Joe Wilson's wife worked for the CIA?
MITCHELL: It was widely known among those of us who cover the intelligence community and who were actively engaged in trying to track down who among the foreign service community was the envoy to Niger. So a number of us began to pick up ... more »

There was good news on the economy today with jobs rising for the first time since January. But the White House was preoccupied with the rapidly moving investigation into the possibly criminal outing of a CIA agent.

Nineteen skyjackers are not the Soviet Union

on Fri 02 Feb 2007 09:22 AM EST
I wrote this book introduction at the end of 2004. Now that we have a White House and its top crust, along with its willing allies in the media, joining in a new push to get war with Iran, it is again timely.
As a U.S. Supreme Court justice once said, “militarism is not our national way of life.” That was in 1945, during the biggest conflict in global history, World War II, when Americans actually were fighting for a way of life, namely the right to live as they chose without the looming threat of governmental ... more »
